Eliane Ortega Bernabéu will be discussing this topic and the concentration camps in Algeria.
In his presentation, Ortega will discuss the topic of Spanish Republicans who were exiled to Algeria in 1939, an unknown chapter in our contemporary history that deserves more in-depth study. He will analyze notable episodes, such as the departure from Alicante known as the “Final Disbanding,” the dramatic crossing of boats until reaching the coast of Algeria, their arrival in Oran and the existence of concentration camps and death camps.
Eliane Ortega Bernabéu has devoted her research to studying Spanish Republicans exiled to North Africa. She is the daughter and granddaughter of Republicans exiled to Algeria in 1939. She was born in Oran and studied at the Pasteur French lycée. She spent her childhood in that city along with the Spanish Republican community. She became familiar with the Algeria that lived under French colonial control, as well as the early years of the new Algerian republic up to 1972, when she and her family left Oran.
