Expelled: 1609 in Valencia

From June 22, 2011 until July 08, 2011

Montserrat’s Council, in Valencia, will show on Friday 8th of July the film produced by Casa Árabe: Expelled: 1609. The Tragedy of Moriscos.

It is part of the cultural activity program on the fourth century anniversary of the Morisco expulsion from this Valencian village and it aims to collaborate in the spread of the hidden drama related to this historical event.

The story begins when Juan, a young history teacher, finds some ancient manuscripts in a hidden cupboard in his house in Almonacid de la Sierra (Zaragoza). The books seem to be written in Arabic, but after trying to read some pages he realises that they are in fact “aljamiados” - texts written in Spanish but with Arabic letters. One of the books tells the story of a family in the village that was expelled in 1609.

Showing will take place at the Culture House (Casa de la Cultura) in Montserrat (c/ Dos de Maig, 6) at 22.45.
Free entrance, limited by space availability.
