On Wednesday, April 2, Casa Árabe is presenting this book written by Salma El Moumni and published by the firm Sexto Piso, at an event in Madrid where the author will be holding a dialogue with journalist Laura Casielles.

In the streets of Tangier, Alia feels watched. Her presence is somehow troubling, though she does not understand why: people seem to undress her with their eyes. They follow her and insult her. Then, in the illusory privacy of her room, attempting to understand what is men see in her, she begins to take pictures of herself. Posing, she lies down, arches her back, and little by little these photo shoots become a ritual...

Alia starts spending time with Quentin, a Frenchman from her high school. By his side, she discovers a world of privilege, one of lightness, but also of a freedom that proves to be quite fragile. When her photos get posted on the Internet, Alia is forced to flee her country to avoid being accused of violating morality laws. Not knowing whether she will ever be able to return to Tangier, she settles in Lyon, where she feels some sort of safety at last. Until her past finally catches up with her.

Farewell, Tangier, Salma El Moumni’s first novel, portrays the destructive power of men’s stares. With a sharp, blunt style, young novelist Salma El Mounmi delves into the impossibility of returning home and the pain of being uprooted, through the heartbreaking experience of feeling her identity is stolen and her body ravaged.

Speaking with the author in a dialogue will be journalist Laura Casielles.
