Ghost Trail (Les fantômes), by Jonathan Millet (France, Germany, Belgium, 2004, 106 min.) Hamid, a Syrian professor in exile, forms part of a secret group that hunts down the regime’s fleeing leaders. His mission takes him to France, hot on the trail of his former torturer. The revenge he has been obsessed with for years now lies just one step away.

Inspired by a real-life story. Ghost Trail is the first feature film by director Jonathan Millet. It includes performances by Adam Bessa, Tawfeek Barhom, Julia Franz Richter and Hala Rajab. It was presented at the opening session of the “Critics’ Week” in competition for the Caméra d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival of 2024.

Critics have said the following about the film:

“There is no explicit action or violence (...) But there is a great deal of tension. And a seductive character, formidably portrayed by Adam Bessa (...) Millet is not condescending, and does not use stereotypes or an overly affected tone.” Javier Ocaña, El País.

A masterful refutation of spy movies. (...) an authentic gem as minimalist as it is intense, as devastating as it is apparently inconsequential.” Luis Martínez, El Mundo.

“A sensorial, minimalistic, Bressonian-style thriller that envelops Adam Bessa in an aura which feels very cool (...) A slow-burning chase devoid of violence but not of tension (...). Philipp Engel, La Vanguardia.

After the screening, there will be a colloquium with journalists Laila Muharram and Okba Mohammad, from the journal Baynana, to be moderated by Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s Culture Coordinator. You can watch it live on our YouTube channel
