“Theeb,” by Naji Abu Nowar (Jordan, 2014, 100 min.).
In the year of 1916. Theeb is living with his brother Hussein in a forgotten corner of the Ottoman Empire. After their father’s death, one day Hussein must accompany an army officer on his way to a water well on the pilgrimage road to Mecca. Theeb decides to chase after Hussein, thus embarking on a journey through the Arabian desert. When he is left alone and is forced to face his potential enemies, he quickly learns the meaning of words like betrayal, responsibility and maturity, while coming to terms with the meaning of the name he was given by his father: Theeb (“Wolf” in Arabic). It is an exciting film nominated for the 88th edition of the Oscar Awards (2015) in the category of Best Foreign Film.
After the screening, a talk will be held with Nuria Cubas, Director of the Filmadrid Film Festival, and Haizam Amirah Fernández, analyst, professor and commentator specialising in the contemporary Arab world. Conducted by Karim Hauser, coordinator of Casa Árabe’s Cultural Programs.
