“Egypt for Egyptians” is a motto that has been found in Egyptian political, cultural and economic life since the end of the nineteenth century, when the country aspired to become independent from colonial powers and seek its own path and identity. This occurred not only politically, but also in the cultural realm. Men and women aspired to change the world around them, and this quest for independence was reflected in cultural and artistic arenas, as well as others.
This film series being presented at Casa Árabe, held in conjunction with the exhibition “Hassan Fathy: Against the current,” gives us a closer look at three fundamental personages in this project for emancipation: Gamal Abdel Nasser, an army officer and leader of the “Free Officers” movement that carried out a coup d’état on July 23, 1952, becoming the driving force behind a series of revolutionary changes in Egyptian society; Hassan Fathy, the most important architect in the history of modern Egypt; and Youssef Chahine, the most highly acclaimed film director inside and outside of Egypt’s borders.
Our in-depth look at these three figures will occur through films such as Nasser 56 (1996), directed by Mohammad Fadel, a documentary titled It’s Time to Finish the Building, produced by the Al Jazeera network, and two classics by Youssef Chahine: Struggle in the Valley (1954) and The Earth (1969).
