To mark the holding of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the first World Cup to be held in an Arab country, Casa Árabe is organizing an exhibition to highlight football’s power as a tool for achieving inclusive societies. It can be seen from October 6 in Madrid and October 14 in Cordoba.
This is a photographic project by Ofelia de Pablo and Javier Zurita created for Casa Árabe, allowing us to get closer a closer look at various football initiatives and clubs, including the Alacranas de Hortaleza, Darna in Barcelona, the Dragons of Lavapiés, Jugones, and Football for Hope from South Africa. These projects show us how the sport can become an instrument for social transformation, integration and gender equality.
As the authors point out in the text accompanying the exhibition, “In many places around the world, soccer balls roll about each day as a part of the struggle for gender equality, social inclusiveness and integration; in short, to help build better, fairer societies.
Girls and boys from different corners of the world score goals on a daily basis as a way to achieve their own individual successes: to feel like they belong to a community, to learn the importance of teamwork and rules. They don’t have millions of fans screaming in unison while watching them kick the ball, but the game they play is the most important in their lives. Many come to the field burdened by inequality, complicated childhoods and family problems, but they find the tools to get ahead on the field. Armed with nothing but a football, they struggle each day to change their reality, to carve out new identities that will help them grow in complex circumstances.”
The exhibition can be seen at both of Casa Árabe’s headquarters, in Madrid and Cordoba, as part of the full series of activities being held on football to mark the holding of the World Cup.
