Forum: “Youths Against Everyday Hate”

On the dates of March 26 and 27, Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Madrid will be hosting this meeting, at which around one hundred participants will be coming together to build a road map for tackling the problem of hatred in society.

The event, which forms part of the European project “COCO: contra el odio cotidiano” (COCO: Against Everyday Date), run by Cazalla Intercultural, in the town of Lorca, along with Jovesólides, from Valencia, and the Al Fanar Foundation from Madrid; it will be held at the same time as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Over the course of a weekend, around 120 people at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Madrid will be sharing ideas and experiences at this forum, where 36 representatives from the political, social and academic worlds in different regions, as well as experts in awareness campaigns, will be meeting with 78 young people from all over Spain. The goal of the meeting is for them to come together to design a ten-point program for political advocacy against hate in everyday life, as well as a nationwide communication campaign.

Among the political representatives attending the event will be Spain’s Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, the European MP Monica Silvana (PSOE), the Second Vice-President and Councilor for Education and Culture of Ceuta, Carlos Rontomé (PP) and the Deputy of the Autonomous Regional Assembly of Madrid, Serigne Mbayé (UP). Moreover, representatives from civil society and experts on the forum topic, including journalist Moha Gerehou, who will be giving the opening conference, will also be in attendance.

With this forum, the dissemination of its outcomes and the campaign that is created, the project “COCO: Against Everyday Hate,” will be completed, after two years of work with the participation of over 1,300 youths. Funded by the European Union’s Rights, Equality and Citizenship Program, the project has also been provided with the cooperation of Casa Árabe and Oberaxe, and is aimed at creating a national education and awareness strategy to fight racism, Islamophobia, hate speech and hate crimes, both online and offline, in accordance with EU directives and the second Plan to Fight Hate Crimes.
