Seminar organized by Casa Árabe, in conjunction with the École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques (Casa de Velázquez, Madrid) and Toletum (Network for research on the Iberian Peninsula in Antiquity, University of Hamburg). On November 11 and 12 at our headquarters in Madrid. Sign up now by following this link in order to attend in person.

The purpose of this multidisciplinary seminar is to question the predictability of economic developments in the two regions, Southern Spain and North Africa, from a cross-sectional, diachronic perspective. In order to do so, the context of the most recent transformations to have taken place on the Strait of Gibraltar will be considered, using the port cities as a case study.

Analyzing this region from Roman Antiquity and the early Modern Age up to the Middle Ages should make it clear that the situation today is only one of many that were possible, as well as highlighting the importance that well-calculated planning (of both duties and privileges) can hold for development, not only in port cities and their surroundings, but also the region or country as a whole.

With that in mind, the seminar offers a framework for multi- and interdisciplinary dialogue and discussion amongst archeologists, historians, economists, political scientists, sociologists and urban planners, along with the Port of Gibraltar, the Sociedad Española de Estudios para la Comunicación Fija a través del Estrecho de Gibraltar (Spanish Society for Study of a Land Connection in the Strait of Gibraltar, SECEGSA) and the Centro para los Estudios del Transporte en el Mediterráneo Occidental (Center for Transportation Studies for the Western Mediterranean, CETMO).

A special emphasis will be placed on the current impact of ports as core sites for trade and economic development, and as borders, depending on the period examined, as well as the prospects for cooperation between the two shores.

With presentations by (among others):

- Darío Bernal Casasola (University of Cádiz), Gades: A port city on the Strait as a center for imperial trade.
- Aurélien Montel (Université Lumière Lyon 2), Traffic on the Strait of Gibraltar in the Umayyad Era.
- Leila Maziane (Université Hassan II de Casablanca), Tangiers and other ports on the Strait in the Modern Era.
