On February 1, at its headquarters in Madrid, Casa Árabe is hosting the
presentation of this work by visual artist Hanoos Hanoos.
Participating along with Hanoos, holder of a PhD in Fine Arts from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, will be Ignacio Márquez Rowe, a scientific chair holder at the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East, and Nuria Medina, Casa Árabe’s Coordinator of Cultural Programs, who will be presenting and moderating the event.
“Islamic culture is not a culture of image like the West, and though there is no express prohibition in the Qur’an against representing figures, there is a strong condemnation of idolatry.” Through this affirmation, which accompanies the edition of the book recently published by Didot, Hanoos, based on his experience as a painter, reflects on the aesthetics of Western art and Islamic art. This book, divided into two parts (the first autobiographical and the second historical on aesthetics), is a short essay on his work as a visual artist, born in a place where image does not form part of the cultural essentials. In it he analyzes the topic of prohibiting images in Islam and the existence of an aesthetic relationship between Platonic thought and Islamic art.
Hanoos Hanoos (Kufa, Iraq 1958 ). Hanoos earned his bachelor’s degree and PhD in Fine Arts at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He studied at Baghdad’s Institute of Fine Arts and completed his education in Europe, showing an interest in Plato, Aristotle and the Arab philosophers, includingi the mystic Ibn Arabi, and other contemporary thinkers, who have helped him produce an aesthetic discourse very rich in nuance. He has held 38 solo exhibitions, as well as over 100 group exhibits, and he has been given 37 painting awards. His painting is an example of the harmonious fusion between East and West in the cultural realm, contributing to the construction of a world without borders.
