Al-Andalus was a center for knowledge and wisdom. Many Greco-Latin treatises and documents were imported to the region, then being translated and passed on to Christian lands, and thus to Europe.

The production of paper (waraq or kagid) in Al-Andalus can be documented back to at least the tenth century. Middle Eastern geographer al-Maqdisi or al Muqaddasi (936-988) seems to indicate that the Andalusians were very skilled at book making and the production of paper products (wiraqa).

The dar al-Tiraz worked exclusively to serve the monarch, thus becoming a monopoly that symbolized the expression of power. The era of the caliphs was that of greatest splendor for the royal production centers. Issued from their workshops were different types of fabrics, and their renown vied with that of the fabrics from Baghdad and Byzantium. These fabrics were used by the caliph and his family, but a significant portion were intended for use as gifts to Muslim and Christian princes.

At this workshop, we will be embroidering a felt coaster to place under a glass, using an Islamic design. All of the materials are provided by the organizers and are free of charge.
