Casa Árabe and L’Œuvre d’Orient have organized this conference by Monsignor Pascal Gollnisch in Madrid on Thursday, May 5.
Christians in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe and India are enduring major crises. Who are they? How are they dealing with these hardships? In order to shed light on these matters, Casa Árabe and L’Œuvre d’Orient have invited the director of the latter of these two institutions, Monsignor Pascal Gollnisch, to explain the role Spain plays in supporting Eastern Christians within the dynamics of global equilibrium in the Mediterranean basin. Casa Árabe’s General Director, Irene Lozano, will be presenting the event. Also taking part will be journalist Fernando de Haro, a writer and contributor to the COPE news chain, who will be moderating the meeting, and Jumana Trad, president of Fundación Promoción Social.
Based on its work and the relationships that L’Œuvre d’Orient has forged with Eastern Christian communities on-site, Bishop Gollnisch will also be discussing the situation in Ukraine and the history of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
Monsignor Pascal Gollnisch
Bishop Pascal Gollnisch has been a French priest in the diocese of Paris for 40 years. Since 2010, he has been the director of the association L’Œuvre d’Orient, which helps Eastern Christians, as well as being the Vicar General of the Archbishopric of Paris for the Ordinariate of Eastern Catholics in France.
He has traveled throughout the Near East and Middle East (Iraq, Syria, Holy Land, Lebanon, Ukraine) and is well acquainted with the specific features and history of the Eastern Churches. A man of dialogue, he has built bridges between France and the East, while fighting for Christians of the East to be able to remain in their land, if they so wish, through his association.
L’Œuvre d’Orient Spain
In 1856, L’Œuvre des Écoles d’Orient, an association whose purpose was initially to help the children of Lebanon, was founded as an initiative by a group of secular teachers from the Sorbonne. In 1858, it received acknowledgment as a “Work of the Church” by Pope Pius IX. In 1860, the Druze massacre of Christians forced it to expand its scope of activity and open up hospitals and dispensaries. It thus became L’Œuvre d’Orient.
L’Œuvre d’Orient is an organization that helps Christians in the East through bishops, priests and Christian communities in the field. Though it mainly works towards long-term goals, it also plays a role in emergency situations, including wars, conflicts and natural disasters.
With the support of its 70,000 donors, L’Œuvre d’Orient is run by Monsignor Pascal Gollnisch and every year funds over 1,250 projects carried out by 400 Christian communities and institutions. These, in turn work directly with all those in need, regardless of their religious affiliation, in some twenty countries, mainly in the Middle East, but also in the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe and India. In 2020, it gave out more than 18 million euros.
