High Tension in the Middle East: Iran, Iraq and the US

The year of 2020 has started out with fresh new turbulence in a region
already experiencing upheaval. To understand these complex times, Casa
Árabe has invited an experienced journalist and a highly reputable
politics and security analyst to hold a dialogue on the topic. The event
will be taking place in Madrid on Wednesday, January 22.
Rising tensions after the assassination of Irani General Qasem Soleimani by Washington and the downing of a commercial plane from the Ukraine by Tehran have led to instability which is creating new unknown factors. The most notable variables in this equation include: the credibility crisis and popular uprisings in Iran, the role of the Quds Force in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard throughout the region, the implications for neighboring countries like Iraq and its intricate relations with Washington and Tehran, and the historical international agreement to prevent Iran from gaining possession of nuclear weapons.
In order to achieve an understanding of this situation, Casa Árabe has invited an experienced journalist living in Iran, Catalina Gómez Ángel, and a reputable politics and security analyst, Hayder al-Khoei, to discuss these events. Their discussion will be presented by Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s International Relations Coordinator.

Catalina Gómez Ángel is a journalist who has resided in Iran for more than a decade. Her regional coverage has included the war in Syria from several fronts: Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Gaza. She has received acknowledgment on two occasions as the best correspondent from Colombia by Bogota’s Circle of Journalists, and in 2017 she won the Simón Bolívar Award, in the category of Television News, for her coverage of the war in Mosul. She also contributes to media including La Vanguardia, France 24 in Spanish and Radio W of Colombia.
Hayder al Khoei is a politics and security analyst who focuses on Middle East affairs and Iraq. He has been a member of the Middle East and North Africa programs at Chatham House and the European Council for Foreign Relations. He is currently working on a European Union initiative, the Global Exchange on Religion in Society, a platform that brings together civil society and the religious organizations involved in interfaith dialogue and community cohesiveness. He earned a Master’s degree in International Studies and Diplomacy from SOAS, University of London. His analyses have been published in many media outlets, including The Guardian, Al-Monitor, Middle East Eye and Al Jazeera.
