Casa Árabe and the Tirant lo Blanch publishing firm have organized this presentation of the book “Historia del islamismo egipcio y de su fallido ascenso al poder” (“History of Egyptian Islamism and its failed rise to power”) in Madrid on Tuesday, June 22, with the participation of the book’s author Sergio Carranza Förster, diplomat Fidel Sendagorta and journalist Ángela Rodicio.

The second decade of the twenty-first century has been marked by the sudden rise and resounding fall of Islamism. Egypt, the cradle of this ideology, is the Arab country which has most clearly and completely undergone this process. Most of the studies published on Egyptian Islamism, the majority in English, are limited to the period immediately before and after the so-called Arab Spring. However, what happened on the banks of the Nile cannot be understood by analyzing such a limited time period alone. The rise and fall of Egyptian Islamism is the result of lengthy and complex ideological, religious and political developments that have resulted in cycles of co-existence and conflict. This book provides a historical analysis of Egyptian Islamism stretching from the early Islamization of Egypt to the present day when Islamists, removed from politics, have been torn apart by repression, seclusion and the senselessness of terrorism.  All of this leads to a final reflection on the future of Islamism.

The presentation will be attended by Sergio R. Carranza Förster, the book’s author; Fidel Sendagorta, Director General of Foreign and Security Policy at Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, and a former Spanish Ambassador to Egypt; and Ángela Rodicio, a journalist at Spain’s RTVE media network. The event will be presented by Pedro Martínez-Avial, the General Director of Casa Árabe.

Sergio R. Carranza Förster is a career diplomat, Arabist and Doctor of Law. Since joining the diplomatic corps in 2004, he has worked at the International Legal Advisor’s Office and the Sub-Directorate General for the Middle East of Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Spanish Government. He has been posted at Spain’s Embassies in Nairobi, Cairo, Tripoli and, since 2020, Santiago, Chile. He has also worked at the European External Action Service. Stationed in Egypt from 2011 to 2014, years essential to understanding the rise and fall of Islamism, he stayed regularly in contact with politicians, scholars, preachers, Sufis, Muslim Brotherhood members and Salafists. Prior to that, he had been a professor with the Department of International Law and Economics at the University of Barcelona. He authored a monograph on “Diplomatic Protection and Spanish Practice” (2007) and co-authored a book on “The Western Sahara Question at the United Nations” (1999).
