Casa Árabe and Secuencias: Revista de historia del cine have organized this homage event on the occasion of the presentation of issue number 43-44 of the publication titled “El lugar del otro” (“The Other’s Place”).

The presentation will be given by José Manuel Palacio Arranz, of the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid; Marina Díaz López, of the Cervantes Institute; Farshad Zahedi, of the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid; María Luisa Ortega Gálvez, of Secuencias: Revista de historia del cine, and Daniel Sánchez Salas, of Secuencias: Revista de historia del cine. The event is presented and moderated by Nuria Medina, Casa Árabe’s Coordinator of Cultural Programs.

Secuencias is the cinema history journal created by Alberto Elena, a researcher and professor, in 1994. He ran the journal until 2005 and remained on the Executive Advisory Committee until 2014, the year when he passed away. It is for this reason that many colleagues wish to pay homage to him with the presentation of a new issue given the name El lugar del otro (The Other’s Place). The title was not decided by chance: the cinema researcher mainly articulated his important research in the field of peripheral filmmaking in the Middle East, Africa and India, the main focal point of this monograph. He was also notable for his work as the programming director of a large number of film series organized at Casa Árabe since the institution was founded.

The key words defining his work are colonialism, Third Cinema, filmmakers/film d’auteur, the star system and trans-national audiovisuals, and his prestigious works allowed him to make contact with specialists in a wide range of fields of study from geographical locations far and wide. This is why members of cultural institutions and academia, along with colleagues and disciples, have wished to take part in this honorary monographic issue, including Minerva Campos, Irmgard Emmelhainz, Juan Guardiola, Mariano Mestman, Vicente Sánchez-Biosca, Farshad Zahedi, Marina Díaz López, Manuel Palacio, Rubén Romero and Ana Albertos.
