Casa Árabe and Casa África have organized this event to pay homage to the author from Tangiers on Friday, May 31 in Madrid.
The event will be moderated by journalist Nicolás Castellano and includes the participation of Carlos Zanón, a writer; Sonia Fernández Quincoces, an informant on African literatures; Álvaro Lavín, an actor and stage director; Marina Seresesky, a filmmaker, and Fernando Marías, a writer.
It will include the reading of an excerpt from the work Me llamo Suleimán (My Name Is Suleiman), given by actress Marta Viera.
Antonio Lozano (Tangiers, 1956-Agüimes, 2019), a teacher, professor, translator, writer, cultural manager and traveler, but above all, someone charitable and good-hearted, was one of those unique people who are remembered wherever they go. Born and brought up in Tangiers, where the city’s multicultural, multiracial atmosphere led him to remain in constant contact with otherness, the desire to learn about, understand and embrace all that is different was always stirred within him. And it was in the Canary Island, in his adoptive town of Agüimes, where he put the principles in which he believed into practice.
Thus, from his position as the city councillor for culture and local development, with the support of a dedicated team in which he believed, he founded the Festival del Sur-Three Continents Theater Encounter and the International Oral Storytelling Festival known as “Cuenta con Agüimes,” as well as other activities. His readers will remember him for him many works of fiction, a large part of which were inspired by Africa and the Arab world, including Harraga, Un largo sueño en Tánger (A Long Dream in Tangiers), Me llamo Suleimán (My Name Is Suleimán) and Las cenizas de Bagdad (The Ashes of Baghdad). This homage is being paid in the attempt to remember his multifaceted personality as a creator and human being.
