The presentation will show domestic items from homes during the era of the caliphs where interventions have been carried out in an area forming the greatest urban expansion of the city, the western boroughs, or “arrabales.” These pieces, made of materials like ceramic, metal, bone and glass, show us how our ancestors once lived in old Qurtuba. They are items which were used in the kitchen, at the table and for storage, but also in a wide range of activities: carpentry, spinning, medicine, music… These household items will be shown just as they appeared during the archeological work, but we will also get the chance to see the way they were used inside of the houses, thanks to Virtual Archeology.

Cristina Camacho Cruz has a bachelor’s degree in Geography and History from the University of Cordoba, which was originally linked with the Department of Antiquity and Middle Age Sciences at that same university. She has devoted her career to archeology over the last 20 years and to research involving archeology. She has directed archeological interventions in the city and province of Cordoba, performed consulting work for the Provincial Department of Culture of the Autonomous Regional Government of Andalusia, collaborated with various institutions (the Madinat al-Zahra Archeological Site, the CSIC City Archeology and Architecture Laboratory, the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the University of Nottingham) and taken part in congresses, events, seminars and courses about medieval Islamic archeology. Her participation as the director of the “Ronda Oeste de Córdoba” Archeological Intervention (2000-2008), the largest archeological intervention in a developed urban area in Europe, focused her line of research on domestic architecture and urban planning in Al-Andalus. Since then, she has produced many publications and taken part in many congresses, building on a new and necessary focus revolving around the presentation of archeological information in a manner that allows for its public dissemination. It is on the basis of this work that her collaboration with Rafael Valera Pérez began.

Rafael Valera Pérez, with a bachelor’s degree in Geography and History from the University of Cordoba, has devoted his career to archeology in the field since 2001, directing many different interventions and participating in even more as a technical draftsman. For several years now, he has been specializing in Virtual Archeology, the three-dimensional representation of archeological spaces and objects using computerized means, as a tool for widespread dissemination and teaching about historical and archeological heritage. Within his field, he has developed materials and workshops about heritage sites, using images and 3D reproductions of different items and places as the foundation of his work. For some time now, he has been collaborating with Cristina Camacho to create images of the spaces and artifacts documented during the Ronda Oeste archeological intervention, to give us a closer look at the lifestyle of the inhabitants in the Western boroughs of caliphal Cordoba.
