Marks of Identity is a photographic tour through different countries in which Islam forms part of life and local culture to a greater or lesser degree. The journey begins to the south of Spain’s borders and moves eastward, passing through Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Israel, Palestine, India, Vietnam and China.
These photographs by Francisco González Pérez explore different facets of religious practice, its influence on the life of the devout and on the arts, including architecture and its decorative features which, in the construction of places of worship, reflect simplicity and the sublime, but above all beauty, a symbol of praise for the Creator.
It is a journey which allows us to observe and understand the similarities and differences between these countries, in which unity and diversity offer enrichment. Unity in the nature of belief and diversity determined by the cultural tradition of a people and their age-old customs. Customs which, in turn, are adapted, developed and finally transformed permanently to coexist with the essence of faith.
