Towards the end of his farewell tour through Asia and Africa in 2016, Hyperpotamus got the opportunity to play in Cairo. This is where he was given the chance to play live with a local Egyptian artist, Abdullah Miniawy. Cairo’s gray, chaotic traffic afforded them just one fast hour to improvise, rehearse and see whether they would make a good fit for the concert awaiting them shortly after. What arose from that improvisation happens few times in life: it was musical love at first sight, completely unforeseen and impossible to grasp in full. Mixing the musical foundations created exclusively with the voice of Hyperpotamus and Sufi inspiration in vocals, with lyrics by Abdullah Miniawy, these two performers who love the heterodox and risk-taking created a sort of music that had never been heard before.
Hyperpotamus (Jorge Ramirez-Escudero) makes music using only his voice. He started rehearsing his music in the tunnels of Madrid’s Metro system, where he began to draw people’s attention. From there he moved on to giving concerts in Madrid’s vibrant music scene from 2008 until setting off on three consecutive tours through the United States in 2009. In 2010, he moved to London, where he even performed at the Royal Festival Hall and well-known festivals including The Big Chill and the London Jazz Festival. Meanwhile, in Spain he performed at Jazzaldia, Benicassim, Primavera Club, etc. As of 2012, he went on tours throughout the Pacific, Latin America, Asia and Africa. It was on this last tour that he met Abdullah Miniawy, with whom he has been collaborating on an exclusive basis. He is currently working on composing and producing music for audiovisuals.
Abdullah Miniawy is an Egyptian writer, singer, trumpetist and composer. He has performed at festivals all over the world, including the “Musique wel Salam” festival (Tunisia) and “La Voix Est Libre,” “Jazz Nomades” and “Ecrire la Méditarranée” (France). More recently, he performed with jazz trumpetist Erik Truffaz. He has also performed at concert halls and theaters with great inspiration in Egypt, his native country. Furthermore, Abdullah has composed soundtracks for many films, the most notable of which include “Cabaret Crusades,” directed by Wael Shawki. His album “Darraje,” recorded with the cooperation of Carl Gari, was chosen by the prestigious network NPR as one of the best 50 albums of the year in 2016.
