In 2023, the School Science Calendar will also be published in Arabic
From January 09, 2023 until January 22, 2023
Casa Árabe is once again collaborating on the CSIC and the University of León project to translate this educational product for the dissemination of science among primary and secondary school students into Arabic. Download it now!
Did you know that on January 13, 915, Caliph al-Hakam II was born in Cordoba? He promoted science and founded a library that was an important center for the translation and dissemination of works and knowledge from Greco-Latin antiquity in Al-Andalus.
The "Scientific School Calendar of 2023" provides information about anniversaries like this, which includes discoveries, scientific and technological anniversaries, births of renowned researchers and researchers, and scientific advancements and curiosities each and every day, and is accompanied by a teaching guide with guidelines for cross-cutting educational use in the classroom.
To facilitate its use in classrooms and its adaptation to the linguistic reality of our country, it has been published in eleven languages in its online version, including Arabic, thanks to the collaboration of Casa Árabe, which translated the calendar and its teaching guide.
The calendar and guides in the different languages (Spanish, Aragonese, Asturian, Catalan, Basque, Galician, English, French, Arabic, Esperanto and Farsi) can be downloaded free of charge from the website of the IGM (Instituto de Ganadería de Montaña), the initiative’s promoter.
The goal is to bring scientific culture closer to the younger population and to create role-models as close as possible to them. For this reason, a major effort has been made to publicize people and findings from the present that can be viewed as references for young people and, at the same time, provide a vision for dynamic work and current affairs. Special attention has been placed on promoting non-sexist language and to increasing the visibility of women scientists and technology experts, in order to make available role-models that promote scientific-technical vocations among girls and teens. Particular emphasis has also been placed on disseminating the research activity performed by Spanish public centers.
One of this year's innovations is the inclusion in the teaching guide of an appendix with special dates and anniversaries in an easy-to-read format, a supporting resource for students with reading and writing difficulties. The other is its translation into Farsi, thanks to the work by Afghan refugees through the NGO People Help.
The School Science Calendar is a project of the Instituto de Ganadería de Montaña (Mountain Livestock Institute, IGM), a joint center of Spain's High Council for Scientific Research (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC) and the University of León, with funding from the Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT), which is run under the aegis of the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
For the fourth consecutive year, it has once again relied on the collaboration of a large number of professionals in education and other volunteers in the search for anniversaries and the design of complementary activities. Among the many entities supporting the project are several delegations, centers and institutes of the CSIC, and various Spanish universities, including the University of the Basque Country, the University of Coruña and the University of Zaragoza, as well as the Academia de la Llingua Asturiana, Casa Árabe, University of California, Davis (USA), the Spanish Esperanto Federation, the Museo Didáctico e Interactivo de Ciencias (MUDIC), the portal ccult.org, the NGO People Help, the PRISMA Association for Affective-Sexual and Gender Diversity in Science, Technology and Innovation, as well as other public and private entities.
All the events are shared daily on the Twitter account @CalCientifico. The project also has a Telegram group and the possibility of downloading ICAL files to integrate the scientific calendar into online calendars (Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and Microsoft Outlook, as well as others). If you want to send proposals or suggestions, you can write to the email address: calendario.cientifico@csic.es.
