CÓRDOBA
Casa Árabe exhibition halls (at c/ Samuel de los Santos Gener, 9). Mondays to Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. Closed on weekends and holidays. Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.

After being held in Madrid, Casa Árabe is hosting this exhibition at its headquarters in Cordoba, where it can be seen from March 15 through May 19. This is one of the “guest exhibitions” at the Sixteenth Photography Biennial of Cordoba.

The show includes works by: M’hamed Kilito, Mehdi Mariouch, Imane Djamil, Yasmine Hatimi, Yoriyas Yassine Alaoui, Abdelhamid Belahmidi, Abderrahmane Marzoug and Nadia Khallouki.

As part of the PHotoESPAÑA Festival, the portfolios from the “Trasatlántica” section were put on display at the cultural center L’Uzine in Casablanca, being shown for the first time in an Arab country. The exhibition being presented in Cordoba is the result of that encounter and was made possible by cooperation between Casa Árabe and the PHotoESPAÑA Festival, with the support of the Spanish International Development Cooperation Agency (AECID) and the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad.

The dynamic force of Moroccan society in recent years, made visible through phenomena like the “February the 20th” movement in the year 2011, when the popular uprisings known as the “Arab Springs” took place in the region, has a lot to do with the fact that it is a very young society. This tension must not be viewed exclusively in terms of confrontation and conflict, but also as a driving force behind questioning the role which each person plays in society and the way in which society is structured.

The eight Moroccan photographers, both men and women,  shown in this exhibition coincide in producing a notably informative style of photography. You might almost say they feel a calling to provide sociological information, with narratives aimed at a hypothetical viewer who is not necessarily foreign, but perhaps not familiar with certain realities. They can also be considered exploratory projects in which photography also becomes a path for self-knowledge, in terms of the artist as a person and his or her relationship with the surrounding environment and the society in which they live.
The title accompanying these photographs refers not only to the photographic nature of the exhibit, but also the immediacy with which it is possible to approach our neighboring country, culturally much closer to us than many think.
