Four movies will be screened, analyzing the presence of Arab culture in the Americas.
The Arab presence, product of the immigration which occurred as of the late nineteenth century, is one of the various components which make up identities in the Americas. This has given rise to different social practices and unique cultural expressions and, in certain countries, is helping to articulate social networks which are leading to an intensification of relations between countries in the Americas and in the Arab world. Through this film series, Casa Árabe is proposing a reflection on this phenomenon and its current potential, as well as creating spaces which make it possible to hold tri-cultural encounters.
The films which make up this new film series include Only in New York, by Ghazi Albuliwi (USA, France and Turkey, 2013, 86 min.) and American Arab, by Usama Alshaibi (USA-Iraq, 2013). They explore Arab identity in the United States through two different languages: one which is hilarious and fictional, and another in the form of an introspective documentary. In addition to these two productions directed by Americans, one of Palestinian origin and the other Iraqi, are two classics on the Arab-American question: the Canadian film Incendies (Canada, 2010, 113 min.), nominated for an Oscar in 2011, and the Brazilian film To the Left of the Father, by Luiz Fernando Carvalho (Brazil, 2001, 171 min.). The last two are adaptations to the big screen of the respective literary versions by Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad and Brazilian novelist Raduan Nassar.
