SEDLA is a non-profit cultural society founded in September 2022 by teachers from universities, official language schools and other educational centers where the Arabic language is taught throughout Spain. The introduction will be taking place at Casa Árabe's auditorium in Madrid on December 19 at 6:30 p.m., as part of the activities to celebrate International Arabic Language Day. Although this introduction will be taking place in person, you can also watch it live on Casa Árabe's YouTube channel (in Spanish).

The event will be opened by Casa Árabe's assistant director, Cristina Juarranz, and will be attended by members of SEDLA's Board of Directors: Iñaki Gutiérrez de Terán-Benita, UAM (Presidency); Victoria Aguilar Sebastián, UM (Vice-Presidency); Joana Hernández Martínez, EOI Tarragona (Secretary); Lidia Fernández Fonfría, USAL (Treasurer); Dolores Serrano Niza, ULL (Vocalía 3), who will be connected by video; Sonia Prieto Monteagudo, UCM (Vocalía 2); Said Kirhlani, URJC (Vocalía 1); Mohammad T. Alhawary, U. Michigan and executive director of the American Association of Teachers of Arabic (AATA) and Mohammed Dayoub, U. Warwick and a member of the British Association of Teachers of Arabic (BATA), the latter two also connected by video.

Arabic is one of the official languages of the United Nations and the official language of 26 countries, where approximately 300 million people live. It is a culturally rich language, which is geographically close to us. We are linked to it by a common past and a shared present, since it is the second most impor foreign language in our country, and, therefore, a language that deserves to hold a prominent place in the classroom.

SEDLA was created with the aim of being a meeting point for Arabic teachers and students, and was created to promote research and teaching of Arabic as a foreign language (EALE) in Spanish-speaking contexts, similar to two organizations in the Anglo-Saxon world, the American Association of Teachers of Arabic (AATA) in the United States and the British Association of Teachers of Arabic (BATA) in the United Kingdom.

It is made up of individuals, as well as schools, departments and institutions that wish to promote the teaching and learning of the Arabic language, whether they form part of universities, official language schools, public or private centers.

SEDLA’s main goals are: (1) to promote and defend the teaching and study of the Arabic language in Spain and Latin America; (2) to collaborate and establish agreements with other Spanish or foreign entities and associations that share the same goals; and (3) to promote training in the field of Arabic language teaching, above all that which is intended for teachers and students at all educational levels.

In order to pursue these objectives, using the human and material resources at its disposal, SEDLA will have a website, a presence in social media and will propose a wide range of activities, including conferences, congresses, publications, awards, etc.
