The fifteen articles which make up this tome, coordinated by Luz Gómez, have been structured to provide an analysis of the dynamics of dispossession endured by the Muslim world and the way in which social, artistic and doctrinaire movements are seeking to transform them. The first section (“Charisma, Leadership, Authority”) discusses the relations between legitimacy and power within the transnational context of Islam today. The second section (“Identity, Language, Gender”) shows the schism which has been created in the traditional roles of language and gender when defining the personal and collective identities of Muslims. The third section (“Narratives, Change, Dissidence”) delves into the forms of artistic expression used by dissidents and their movements in seeking transgression. Last of all, the fourth section (“Elites, Discourse, Conceptualization”) takes a closer look at the signs for reconfiguration of the singular and collective self which affect the way in which all things Islamic are projected both inside and outside of mainstream Muslim contexts.
