Islam and Muslims: historical perspective and contemporary dynamics
From April 26, 2010 until May 23, 2010
Casa Árabe and Escuela Diplomática (the Diplomatic School) organize this course, co-directed by Gema Martín Muñoz, Casa Árabe's general director, and José Mª Ferré de la Peña, Special Ambassador for Relations with Muslim Communities and Organizations Abroad. It will take place from 5th May to 1st June.
Teachers are diplomats, professionals, specialists and scholars from various disciplines. The course is structured in four thematic sections: Islam as religion in its historical and legal dimension; a contextualized analysis of Islamisms as a political participation phenomenon, as of contestation and rebellion; a reflection on the place Islam has within European societies; and the matter of Islam in international relations.
The opening of the course will be the speech “Los fundamentos del poder en el islam clásico” (Power foundations in classical Islam), by professor Dolors Bramon of the Barcelona University, on the 4th of May.
