The registration period for the new edition of this course by Spain’s Diplomatic School and Casa Árabe has now begun.
Now more than ever, it is of major importance to gain greater depth in our knowledge about the diverse realities representing Islam and Muslims around the world, the complex dynamics and transformations being experienced at present by the Islamic world, and its past and present relations with Spain.
In order to provide as thorough an approach as possible about the many facets of Islam and Muslims today, Spain’s Diplomatic School and Casa Árabe have decide to resume the organization of a course titled “Islam and Muslims Today: Foundations, diversity and relations with Spain,” in what is to become an eighth expanded edition.
As in earlier editions, the course has been divided into four large themed groupings: religious foundations, cultural diversity and political power in Islam; Islamist movements, presence and political participation; global Islam in the international sphere, and relations between Spain and the Arab-Muslim world, across history and at present, in its various dimensions: political, economic, social and cultural.
The course will provide training based on academic and scientific elements, but also more practical work involving political and diplomatic management, combining lectures by professors and experts with presentations by diplomats and professionals from various arenas.
The course is meant to be complementary to the professional practice and needs of people who work with Muslim countries or communities in a context like today’s, in which the exchanges between societies and cultures are on the rise, and there is increasing internationalization among Spanish companies and institutions in Arab countries.
Arranged into four themed units, the course is made up of 22 modules, consisting of 2 classes lasting 1.5 hours each. Normally, one of these will be given by an expert/scholar, while the other, with a more practical focus, will be taught by a diplomat, institutional representative or professional. Coupled with this, there will be an opening session on April 18, also at the Diplomatic School, and a round table discussion to bring the course to an end on May 31 at Casa Árabe (75 class hours in all), when the diplomas will be handed out.
The classes will be given from Monday through Thursday, 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Diplomatic School headquarters, located at Paseo de Juan XXIII, 5 (Metro stop: Metropolitano).

In principle, the course is intended for civil servants of the Spanish Administration (central), but also for anyone who comes into contact with Muslim communities or nationals of countries of Arab-Muslim culture when doing their work (at the autonomous regional or local levels).
Last of all, if any vacancies remain open, the possibility of allowing others to attend the course could be taken into consideration, including professionals, businesspeople, researchers and members of academia, and all those people interested in the subject matter of the course, in general.
The deadline to apply for registration to gain access to the course openings is March 21. To do so, you must send an e-mail message to the Diplomatic School (escuela.cursos@maec.es) with a summarized one-page CV/resume and a brief letter consisting of no more than ten lines explaining why you are interested in the course. In the “subject” line, you must enter: “Solicitud participación Curso Islam.”
The selection will be performed by a Joint Committee of the Diplomatic School and Casa Árabe based on meeting the course criteria and the candidate’s CV/resume. The list of admitted candidates will be published on the Diplomatic School website on April 1. To make sure they can enroll, the selected candidates must send confirmation that they are interested and ensure their regular attendance in the course, using the e-mail address provided above, by Friday, April 8. Otherwise, the places of any accepted candidates who have not confirmed by April 11 will be re-assigned in accordance with the waiting list order.
