"Spaniards in North Africa: Demographics and Protectorate" is the topic to which this latest issue of our journal has been dedicated.
This issue of Awraq: Journal for analysis and thought on the contemporary Arab and Islamic world, for the first and second quarters of 2012, includes articles by well-known specialists who discuss various perspectives on the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco: The Spaniards of Tangier (Bernabé López García); Algeria (Eloy Martín Corrales); From Ifni to Mauritania (Jesús María Martínez Milán); Spanish-Moroccan Brotherhood (Josep Lluís Mateo Dieste); Spain’s Second Republic in the Protectorate (María Rosa de Madariaga); Education in the Protectorate (Irene González González); Medicine and Health Care (Francisco Javier Martínez Antonio); How Morocco Is Perceived (Youssef Akmir), as well as a brief presentation by Víctor Morales Lezcano and a bibliographic study of the Islamic Library (Luisa Mora Villarejo and Juan Manuel Vizcaíno).
Included in the “Miscellaneous” section are contributions by Victoria Khraiche Ruiz-Zorrilla, recipient of the SEEA First Prize, sponsored by Casa Árabe, as well as an article on the economic dimension of Muslim reformism, by Yassine Essid. The section “Figures and Itineraries” contains the biographies of Zawi ibn Ziri and Muhammad XII (Boabdil), which forms part of the Commemorations of the Thousandth Anniversary of the Kingdom of Granada (1013-2013). Last of all, there are articles on books by Raja Alem, Tawq al-Hamam; Muhammad Ashaari, Al-Qaws wa al-Farasha; Miral al-Tahawi, Burukilin Hayts (Gonzalo Fernández Parrilla) and Azmi Bishara, Al-Thawra al-tunisiyya al-mayida (Rocío Vázquez Martí).
