Presentation on the history of this photography collection belonging to the Center for Research on Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) and on the city of Jerusalem during the Ottoman period.

Halit Eren, the General Director of the Center for Research on Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), is giving this conference, organized with the cooperation of the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Madrid and the Diplomatic Mission of Palestine in Spain.

In his presentation, Eren will be presenting the IRCICA’s photo collection and speaking about Jerusalem in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The collection has been handed down to us through the collection of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II and the IRCICA’s archives at the Palace of Yıldız (Istanbul).

The event will also include the participation of Ömer Önhon, the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey in Spain; Musa Odeh, the Ambassador of Palestine in Spain, and Eduardo López Busquets, the General Director of Casa Árabe.

Throughout its history, Jerusalem was a crossroads between different civilizations and was successively governed by different States. As a result of that history, Jerusalem became a Holy City for the three religions of the Book: Islam, Christianity and Judaism. The image of this Jerusalem which has been passed on to us through the earliest photographs in history, dating back to the late Ottoman period, also evokes the shared memory of a time of tolerance when each faith’s existence and heritage were respected and protected.

The conference is taking place on the occasion of the exhibition with the same title hosted by Casa Árabe at its headquarters in Madrid until May 28.
