Specialization, guarantees and marketing when promoting tourism in up-and-coming markets
Halal restaurants and hotels, bars that serve mocktails and "Muslim-friendly" cities: these are a few of the products that businesses and locations around the world are using to compete to attract tourism from Muslim countries, which are increasing in number, more and more active and have increasing expendable income. With growth which is 4.7% higher than the tourism in the rest of the world, halal tourism is becoming a true business opportunity.
Spain is a unique destination in this sense, because of its great appeal to Arab and Muslim tourists. In the last two years, the visits from countries with a Muslim majority (Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, Indonesia, etc.) have multiplied, and their spending per person is usually above average. They visit cities in Andalusia, but they also go to Barcelona and Madrid, attracted there by soccer, shopping and these cities' historical and cultural heritage. However, the tourism and services industries, in general, are not very well-prepared to offer products specialized and adapted to Muslim consumers. Various initiatives and role-players are starting to move in this direction. Granada hosted the first world congress on halal tourism in October. Cordoba has created a platform to promote a halal cluster in the region. Tourism agencies and tour operators are being created which specialize in this topic, and the first studies are being carried out to evaluate the industry's opportunities and the entrepreneurial activities to be carried out in order to launch them at the international level.
With the objective of debating these topics, Casa Árabe is organizing a round table discussion with Nur&Duha, a tour operator that specializes in halal tourism services, with the cooperation of Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, which has just published the first book on the topic in Spain, and the Halal Institute, which specializes in providing certification, standardization and training for the halal market in Spain.
