Casa Árabe hosts the screenings of films during FCAT Cordoba

The films forming part of the 12th edition of the African Film Festival of Cordoba, FCAT, will be shown.
For yet another year at its Cordoba headquarters, from March 21-28 Casa Árabe is hosting screenings of the films forming part of the 12th edition of the African Film Festival of Cordoba, FCAT, presenting a schedule with two sections of competing films (“Hipermetropía” and “En Breve”) and four parallel sections (“Afroscope,” “Tales from the Past: South Africa and Angola,” “Homage to Emil Abossolo Mbo” and “The African Diaspora”).
In addition to this series of films, there will be a set of parallel activities, most notably including the Cinema Aperitifs, informal meetings between filmmakers, movie lovers and journalists; Espacio Escuela, the educational portion of FCAT, Aldea Africana (“African Village”), a workshop space for the youngest ones, and the “Tree of Words” Forum, focusing more on film criticism.
Likewise, the meeting “Literature and Immigration” will be held, as well as the exhibition “They Are My Rights: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights through the eyes of thirty photographers.”

The sign from the 12th edition of the African Film Festival of Cordoba is based on a work by photographer Manolo Yllera, belonging to a series which pays homage to Malian photographer Seydou Keïta (1921-2001), created for the magazine AD, of which Yllera is a top photographer.
This series intends to revisit the particular visual style of the Malian photographer, achieved thanks to the contrast between fabrics and prints, giving rise to overpowering images in which the human face stands out as the protagonist. Yllera is interested in the emotional dimension of Keïta’s portraits: in all of his photographs, the characters look dignified, important, flattered.
This photo series’ success gave rise to Manolo Yllera’s participation in a documentary produced in France about the figure of Seydou Keïta.

Screening of this documentary film by Dalila Ennadre (Morocco and France, 2014, 90 min.), as part of FCAT Cordoba.Most of the inhabitants of the medina never leave, and the outside world only reaches them through television. The place lights up the imagination of tourists, but for locals it is a harsh reality. An honest look at the heart of Casablanca, which keeps beating strong.

Karim Loualiche returns to Algeria, after having left over ten years earlier. There, his memories of a house on fire and the reason for his departure torment his memory. Documentary and fiction intermix, and we see a very personal Algeria moulded by history and remembrance.

This diary filmed with a mobile phone is a bittersweet portrait of a youth that still tries to remain excited by the world. The very act of filming becomes one of resistance in light of a series of existential doubts in a tense geopolitical environment.

Hicham Lasri (Morocco, 2015, 88’). Fiction
Tarik wears makeup, dresses like a woman and dances for money at weddings. The old age of their horse marks the end of the family business. Tarik sees his father burst into tears, forcing him to face a mysterious tragedy that ruined his life years ago.

In the 1980’s, a sporadic guerrilla war has plagued northern Niger. In 2007, a group of armed men from the Movement of Nigeriens for Justice has attacked a military garrison. They live awaiting a confrontation given the threat by an invisible enemy.

Khady Sylla (Senegal and France, 2005, 52’). Documentary
How do you describe madness? Can the pain which it causes be expressed? In 1994, when she was about to fall prey to madness, Khady Sylla met Aminta Ngom, who exhibited her madness freely, with no fear of provocation. During her years of suffering, Aminta was her window to the world.

Maha is an art director in the cinema world. She is an expert on creating a world of images. Her pressure at work is on the rise. She can imagine another life, and Maha gets caught between two realities: the first resembles the movie sets she designs, and the other her supposed real life.

The farmers, shepherds and rebels in the regions of the Blue Nile and Nuba Mountains in Sudan continue to take care of the land and animals, respecting their traditional culture despite bombing by the government and the civil war.

Kaouther Ben Hania (Tunisia, France, Canada and United Arab Emirates, 2014, 90’). Fiction
The director decides to investigate the mystery of the Challat (the pocketknife) of Tunisia, a motorcycle rider who, pocketknife in hand, went about the city’s streets slashing women’s buttocks. People didn’t know whether he was a real delinquent or just an urban legend.

Noaz Deshe (Tanzania, Italy and Germany, 2013, 115’). Fiction
An albino boy survives however he can in a Tanzanian rural community where albinos are hunted down because people believe their skin has healing properties. His mother decides to send him to the city to protect him. There, however, he must deal with a network of mafias.
