Journalist Tomás Alcoverro is presenting his latest work, published by Diéresis, at the Casa Árabe headquarters in Madrid. The presentation will be held on April 16.

Participating with Alcoverro will be TVE journalist José Antonio Guardiola. The event will be presented by Pedro Martínez-Avial, the General Director of Casa Árabe.

Veteran journalist Tomás Alcoverro has lived in Beirut since 1970 and has seen how the city was transformed into a battleground within the civil war lasting fifteen years, as well as a multitude of shorter but no less destructive wars. This has turned Beirut into a “surrealist” city, as he himself has described it, as surrealistic as the country of which it is the capital, Lebanon. However, despite living within a constant earthquake, Beirut has never stopped being a lively, cheerful, young city, always outward-looking, to the surprise of locals and foreigners alike, with its vibrant nightlife, its multicultural mix, its financial activity and its status as a mecca of Eastern literature. Nobody knows more than Alcoverro about the forces driving a city and a country which best represent the mythical phoenix rising from its ashes: they are always reborn.

Tomás Alcoverro  is the most veteran and highly-praised correspondent in the Middle East for a Spanish media outlet. He lives in Beirut, the city from which he has become a unique witness to the events in a region undergoing constant conflicts. He has lived through wars and met with leaders, all narrated through more than eight thousand chronicles on the pages of the daily newspaper  La Vanguardia. Decorated for his work with Spain’s Queen Isabella Commendation and the Cross of Sant Jordi, he has earned the Godó, Gaziel, Ortega y Gasset, Vázquez Montalbán and Cirilo Rodríguez journalism awards. He has authored several books, the most recent of which is “¿Por qué Damasco?" (“Why Damascus?), on the war in Syria.
