Spanish and foreign experts meet in Cordoba from November 2-4 to discuss this topic.

In order to analyze the peri-urban estates around the cities of the Muslim West, a series of international congresses has been proposed, with the title of “The Elite Estates of the Muslim West and Sicily: Power, production and pleasure.” This series of congresses will be held at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Cordoba from November 2-4 with the title: “Landscapes of Power: Cordoba and the Umayyad estates (eighth to eleventh centuries).

The event, which has been organized on the basis of 16 presentations, will include the participation of specialists who will use a multidisciplinary perspective to deal with studying the estates of the Umayyad era, which populated the extensive area in Cordoba’s periphery. Written sources and archeology have revealed the existence of many of these residences, usually created by the emirs and caliphs themselves, including al-Rusafa and al-Na’ura, but also other important personages from the ancient capital of Al-Andalus. Likewise, they will be analyzing the entire Umayyad period (eighth to eleventh centuries) and Al-Andalus in general, examining the diachrony of these estates in order to ascertain what happened to them after the fall of the Umayyad dynasty.

The congress will be held as part of the research, development and innovation project “Almunias of the Islamic West: Architecture, archeology and documentary sources” and the Associate UGR-CSIC Unit “Arab and Islamic Cultural Heritage.”
