Launching of 38th issue of Andalucía en la Historia

From November 05, 2012 until November 12, 2012

On Monday November 12th, Casa Árabe and the Centro de Estudios Andaluces launched issue number 38 of the magazine Andalucía en la Historia. Caballeros medievales, entre las armas y las letras [Andalucia in History. Medieval Knights, caught up between weapons and quills].

Among the attendees were the director of the Centro de Estudios Andaluces, Carmen Mejías Severo, the director of the magazine Andalucía en la Historia, the Modern History professor at the University of Cordoba (UCO) Manuel Peña Díaz, the Medieval History professor at the University of Huelva and coordinator of the special issue on medieval knights Juan Luis Carriazo Rubio and the Spanish Literature professor at the UCO Cristina Moya García. The event took place at 19.30 at the Auditorium (c/ Samuel de los Santos Gener, 9 –corner c/ Velázquez Bosco to Plaza de la Agrupación de las Cofradías).

The existence of the border stated a complex neighbourhood relation between Muslims and Christians all along the Late Middle Age, enabling that in Andalucia those knight ideals gained unusual strength, precisely when in the rest of the European territories the knighthood was in decline. During the 14th and 15th centuries, war in Andalusian territory allowed that those knight ideals spread to wider social groups. Promoted by the border, new heroes arose: some with noble origins other from the people; some Christians and others Muslims; a lot fought with their sword, but other did with the quill, because important treaties were written on nobility and knighthood. All of them took part in battles and showed off in jousts and tournaments, forging legends that literature and art have keep alive up to now.
