Learn “Algéroise” dance with Esraa Warda

The artist of Algerian origin will be visiting Madrid and is giving a workshop at Casa Árabe, to be held on Tuesday, September 14.
With the guidance of Esraa Warda, this workshop will explore the Algéroise movement, a musical style with influences from Al-Andalus, performed by this renowned artist from Algiers.
Algéroise is a traditional classical style that represents the essence of “Algiers, the White” or “El Behdja,” the port city of Algiers noted for its white colonial architecture set along the blue Mediterranean. It is a feminine dance, yet strongly rhythmic and meditative.
All students will learn to dance in this pensive formed by this style, holding a handkerchief or “mouchoir” in their hands to improve coordination. They will also become familiar with footwork and basic movements, while learning more about the rhythms and aesthetics of Algéroise dance.
Esraa Warda is a renowned educator and artist based in New York who specializes in the various forms of traditional Algerian and Moroccan dance. A daughter of the Algerian diaspora, Warda is a tireless fighter for the representation and preservation of traditional dances performed by North African women and advocates for the decolonization of dance, attempting to eliminate the Eurocentric, Orientalist and patriarchal visions with which this form of cultural expression is usually portrayed.
Esraa is a product of a folk upbringing, having studied the various forms in which oral history is passed down. Through her work, she has become a custodian of collective memory, starting from her own living room at her family home in Algiers. The artist ensures the continued existence of this knowledge, through both her attitude as a lifelong apprentice to elders and her work as a teacher for future generations.
Her dance workshops and lectures have been given space at such prestigious institutions of higher education as Cornell University, Wellesley College, King’s College (London) and the University of Ottawa. She has performed in many cities across Europe and the Americas.
