As part of the series “Writers and the Mediterranean,” Casa Mediterráneo
and Casa Árabe are giving this colloquium and talk with writer Javier
Reverte, which will be taking place on Thursday, January 10 in Madrid.
The event is moderated by Javier Hergueta, the General Director of Casa Mediterráneo. It will be presented by Pedro Martínez-Avial, the General Director of Casa Árabe.
Casa Mediterráneo is beginning its program of events in Madrid withthe cooperation and generosity of Casa Árabe, and it is doing so through a colloquium that forms part of the series of events titled “Writers and the Mediterranean,” with the participation of Javier Reverte, a truly classic writer in travel literature and an expert on the Mare Nostrum, about which he has authored several books, including El sueño de Ulises (Ulysses’ Dream), Un otoño romano (A Roman Autumn), El hombre de las dos patrias (The Man with Two Countries) and others.
A tireless traveler, Reverte has had major bestsellers published, including both fictional works and travel writing, and in particular his Africa Trilogy (which includes El sueño de África (Africa’s Dream), Vagabundo en África (Vagabond in Africa) and Los caminos perdidos de África (The Lost Ways of Africa), his books on the Americas and the polar circle, in which he combines his real-life travel experiences with historical references on the lands he has visited, explaining today’s situations through the past, and outlining parallelisms with the livings of other writers who traveled through the same places. Most notable in this sense is his work La aventura de viajar: Historias de viajes extraordinarias (The Adventure of Traveling: Tales of extraordinary trips, 2006), an eclectic book in which he describes his life as a traveler, starting with his childhood outings and continuing on with the war chronicles that have taken him all over the world, and his experiences as a traveler that have led him to become familiar with the most inhospitable places far from our Western world.
Javier Reverte. Reverte studied Philosophy and Journalism. He was a journalist for nearly 30 years, working as a foreign correspondent in London (1971-1973), Paris (1973-1977) and Lisbon (1978) and as a special envoy to many different countries all over the world. He has also written articles and been a political chronicler, interviewer, editorialist, editor-in-chief, reporter for the program En portada by TVE and assistant director of the formerly published newspaper Pueblo. Always attracted by the world of literary creation, he has worked as a screenwriter for radio and television, as well as authoring novels, poetry books and travelogues.
