Morocco: Aspirations and challenges of a key country to Spain and the EU

Casa Árabe, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Real Instituto Elcano have organized this conference in Cordoba, with the participation of three experts on this topic.
The event will include interventions by Intissar Fakir, the editor-in-chief of Sada, Carnegie Endowment (Washington D.C); Thierry Desrues, a senior scientist with the Advanced Social Studies Institute (IESA) of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Cordoba, and Haizam Amirah Fernández, main researcher on the Mediterranean and Arab World at the Real Instituto Elcano (Madrid). Moderated by Javier Rosón, the manager of Casa Árabe in Cordoba.
Morocco is a country of strategic importance to Spain and a key partner for the European Union among its neighbors to the south. In order to analyze the political, economic and social changes that have taken place in Morocco within the current context of transformation in the southern Mediterranean, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Real Instituto Elcano, with the cooperation of Casa Árabe, have organized this round table discussion. Its objectives include performing a review of the status of the complex relations between Morocco (within the context of its North African surroundings) and Spain (in its own European milieu), highlighting both the shared aspirations and interests, as well as the common risks and challenges.
Intissar Fakir is the editor-in-chief of Sada. Her professional experience has focused mainly on the Middle East and North Africa, including topics involving political reform, democratization and socio-economic development. Before joining the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, D.C., she was a special assistant to the Vice-President of Strategy and Policy at the National Endowment for Democracy. Editor-in-chief of the Arab Reform Bulletin, a predecessor to Sada, at Carnegie she has also worked on the implementation of programs in democracy and educational assistance in the Middle East. She has been a political risk consultant at the Eurasia Group, as well as contributing to several newspapers and publications, including the Daily Star and The Guardian.
Haizam Amirah Fernández is a head researcher at the Real Instituto Elcano and an associate professor at the Instituto de Empresa (IE). He received part of his training at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He has worked at the United Nations (New York) and at Human Rights Watch (Washington, D.C.), and he has had numerous articles and books published, including: “El Magreb: Realidades nacionales y dinámicas regionales (National Realities and Regional Dynamics,” Madrid, Síntesis, 2008); “North Africa: Politics, Region, and the Limits of Transformation (London and New York: Routledge, 2008). Coordinator of the book “La Asociación Euromediterránea una década después” (Madrid: Real Instituto Elcano and FRIDE, 2005), as well as its English-language version “The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership: Assessing the First Decade.”
Thierry Desrues is a senior scientist for Spain’s National Scientific Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC), at the Institute of Advanced Social Studies (IESA). He is an associate researcher for the Institut de Recherches et d’Etudes sur le Monde Arabe et Musulman (IREMAM) at the CNRS and TEIM. His work as a researcher focuses on political processes and social changes in Morocco (participation, representation, collective action, rural development, ICTs (with a special interest in youth and women’s activism). The author or coordinator of different works, he has had scientific articles published in journals such as Gender Studies, Mediterranean Politics, L’Année du Maghreb, Revue des mondes musulmans et de la Méditerranée, Revista internacional de sociología, Revista de Estudios Internacionales Mediterráneos, Hérodote, etc.
