Morocco in the Twenty-first Century

On Monday, September 23, Casa Árabe, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Madrid and the Parliament of Spain are organizing a conference titled "Morocco in the Twenty-first Century: A society undergoing a process of change," within the framework of the Second Spanish-Moroccan Parliamentary Forum.

The conference will be directed by Karim Ghellab, President of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco, and Mohammed Cheikh Biadillah, President of the House of Councilors of the Kingdom of Morocco, and it will be presented by Eduardo López Busquets, the General Director of Casa Árabe. The event will take place at 5:00 p.m. at the Casa Árabe Auditorium in Madrid (at Calle Alcalá, 62). This meeting with representatives from civil society, experts on Morocco and researchers forms part of the activities held within the Second Spanish-Moroccan Parliamentary Forum to be held in Madrid on the dates of September 23 and 24. The Presidents of the two Houses of the Moroccan Parliament will be speaking about the processes of changes which have gradually been taking place in Morocco in recent times. Both of these parliamentarians have been ministers and will deal with the political, constitutional, social, cultural and economic factors involved, all with the objective of providing information on the reality of Morocco at the present time. When the speeches have come to an end, a colloquium will be held amongst those participating.
 

Karim Ghellab (Casablanca, 1966)


An engineer from the National School of Road and Bridge Engineers of Paris, after a brief time working at the ONA Group, King Mohammed VI named Mr. Ghellab to be the Director General of Railroads. From 2002 to 2011, he was the Minister of Equipment and Transportation, a role in which he focused on modernizing the road and highway system, railroads, ports and airports, with excellent results. Within the political world, Karim Ghellab was elected twice in municipal elections (2003 and 2011) and is currently a member of parliament for the constituency of Bemsik and a City Councilman on the Municipal Council of Sbata and in the city of Casablanca. In 2011, he was chosen to be the President of the House of Representatives. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Istiqlal political party.

Mohammed Cheikh Biadillah  (Smara, 1949)


A tenured professor of Internal Medicine, he has been the Director of Clinical Medicine Service “B” at the University Hospital Center of Ibnou Rochd, and he has published many scientific articles in the fields of medicine, anthropology and political science. He has been the Minister of Health (2002-2007), Governor of the Safi Prefecture (1998-2002), Governor of the Salé Prefecture (1992 - 1998) and an observer in the process for identification of populations in the Sahara under the auspices of the MINURSO at the camps of Tindouf (1994-1999). In 2009, he became a member of the House of Councilors and was elected to be its President. He is also the President of the Shura Advisory League for the Senate Chambers.
