On Tuesday, October 21, CSIC researcher Maribel Fierro will be giving this conference in Córdoba as part of the series “Semblances of Cordoba: the Umayyad era in the first person.” Come join us and found out what life was like in the city’s souks through the voice of this interesting perfume maker.

The souk, or local market, was the main hub for commercial activity in city centers and rural areas alike, although there were some differences between the two. The information we possess about craftsmen and small traders in Al-Andalus tends to be of a general nature, as is the case with the information collected in treatises about oversight of the souk. They tell stories of carpenters, cedar wood workers, tanners, weavers, potters and others, with sme detail about their practices, especially the most fraudulent. Few names have come down to us, like that of perfumer Muḥammad b. Nuʽmān, whom we know of thanks to a passage in Ibn Hayyan’s chronicle. Oftentimes, scholars who devoted themselves to religious wisdom, known the ulemas, earned their living from trades related to the souk, and as a result we have further references to names from that world.

At her conference, Maribel Fierro will be focusing on some of these figures in order to reconstruct the atmosphere of a Moorish souk based on what we currently know about them.
