Oriental Fantasies in Málaga
From October 28, 2010 until November 30, 2010
Casa Árabe and the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo will display Málaga from November 2nd to November 30th the season Oriental Fantasies.
It offers an outlook on Orientalism in Spanish cinema since the beginning of the 20th Century. Showings will take place at Casa Árabe's garden.
The season, whose representative is Alberto Elena, reveals the Orient imagined by the West, full of stereotypes: exoticism, colour and adventure. The mute film The Sect of the Mysterious (La secta de los misteriosos) inaugurates the season, it will be shown while a piano concert is being played.
The Mysterious Sect (La secta de los misteriosos), by Alberto Marro (Spain, 1916, 70 min.).
Adventure and suspense mute film shot as a three chapter serial. In a theatrical and exotic scene, the mystery of a hidden treasure whose key is placed in the pieces of a necklace. Richard Krull 's piano music will be played during the showing.
Aixa's song (La canción de Aixa), by Florian Rey (Germany and Spain, 1939, 107 min.).
Musical set in an Arab country where two cousins, who have just put an end to the quarrels that have divided their family for a long time, fall in love with the same woman. She is a pretty dancer called Aixa, played by Imperio Argentina. The Arabic version created to be distributed within the Arab countries is to be showed with Spanish subtitles.
Desert Lovers (Los amantes del desierto), by G.Alessandrini, F.Cerchio, G. Vernuccio and L.Klimovsky (Spain, 1957, 82 min.).
In an imagined sultanate, two rivals fight fiercely and the loser dies during the battle. His son; considered dead by everyone, becomes the leader of an uprising to reconquer his father's throne. In one of the actions, the evil man's daughter is kidnapped and the rebel falls in love with her.
The Hundred Knights (Los cien caballeros), by Vittorio Cottafavi (Italy, France and Germany, 1964, 111 min.).
A film that shows a stereotyped image of the Arab as an intruder through the story of a village which, around the first millennium, is occupied by the Sheik Abengaldon. The town tries to pacify the situation, although his sole daughter Sancha is against it. Fernando, a young merchant, feels the danger and decides to set off with his carts filled with wheat, but the Arabs take control over the whole lot of goods. Fernando decides to face them finally with the peasants' help.
The Slave of Paradise (La esclava del paraíso), by José María Elorrieta (Spain, 1968, 92 min.).
Omar, son of Granada's vizier, realizes after having been away for a time that his palace has been seized and his favorite woman in the harem has disappeared. Helped by his most loyal friend, Omar fights to protect his own people and to put an end to the new tyrannical regime.
Requiem for Granada, by Vicente Escrivá (Spain and Germany, 1991, 50 min. Each chapter).
Mohamed XII (known as Boabdil among the Christians), the last king of Granada, tells the storystarting with his childhood up to the defeat when facing the Catholic Monarchs. It explains how he lost the last Muslim bastion in al-Andalus facing Christians that, that very same year, 1492, were starting the conquest of the American continent. Series produced for television, the first and last chapters will be shown.
In the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo in Málaga (c/ Alemania, s/n) at 20.00, except on November 2nd, that there will be a show at 19.00 and 20.10. Free entrance.
