Oriental Fantasies in Spanish Cinema
From February 17, 2011 until March 25, 2011
From March 4th to 28th, Casa Árabe replays this cinema season, which offers an outlook on Orientalism in Spanish cinema since the beginning of the 20th Century.
The season, whose representative is Alberto Elena, reveals the Orient imagined by the West, in this case, Spain, full of stereotypes: exoticism, color and adventure.

Aixa's song (La canción de Aixa), by Florian Rey (Germany and Spain, 1939, 107 min.).
Musical set in an Arab country where two cousins, who have just put an end to the quarrels that have divided their family for a long time, fall in love with the same woman. She is a pretty dancer called Aixa, played by Imperio Argentina. The Arabic version created to be distributed within the Arab countries is to be showed with Spanish subtitles.
Desert Lovers (Los amantes del desierto), by G.Alessandrini, F.Cerchio, G. Vernuccio and L.Klimovsky (Spain, 1957, 82 min.).
In an imagined sultanate, two rivals fight fiercely and the loser dies during the battle. His son; considered dead by everyone, becomes the leader of an uprising to reconquer his father's throne. In one of the actions, the evil man's daughter is kidnapped and the rebel falls in love with her.
The Slave of Paradise (La esclava del paraíso), by José María Elorrieta (Spain, 1968, 92 min.).
Omar, son of Granada's vizier, realizes after having been away for a time that his palace has been seized and his favorite woman in the harem has disappeared. Helped by his most loyal friend, Omar fights to protect his own people and to put an end to the new tyrannical regime.
Requiem for Granada, by Vicente Escrivá (Spain and Germany, 1991, 50 min. Each chapter).
Mohamed XII (known as Boabdil among the Christians), the last king of Granada, tells the storystarting with his childhood up to the defeat when facing the Catholic Monarchs. It explains how he lost the last Muslim bastion in al-Andalus facing Christians that, that very same year, 1492, were starting the conquest of the American continent. Series produced for television, the first and last chapters will be shown.
Film exhibition will take place at Casa Árabe’s Auditorium in Madrid (c/ Alcalá, 62) at 19.30. Original version with Spanish subtitles. Free entrance prior ticket collection from 19.00 onwards. Maximum two tickets per person.
