On Monday, July 1, Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and
Agenda 2030 is organizing this debate at the Casa Árabe headquarters,
with the participation of Francesca Albanese and Minister Pablo
Bustinduy.
As reaffirmed in the Political Declaration of the 2023 SDG Summit, sustainable development cannot be realized without peace and security; and peace and security are at risk without sustainable development. The 2030 Agenda also calls for the removal of obstacles faced by people living under foreign occupation that negatively affect sustainable development.
Armed conflicts and instability have persisted or intensified around the world, causing human suffering, undermining the achievement of the SDGs and violating human rights. The situation in Gaza painfully illustrates this reality.
The all-encompassing nature of human security and the SDGs requires a coordinated, comprehensive response in which respect for international law, including the protection, respect and fulfillment of human rights, must lie at the forefront.
The debate, organized by Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, will be moderated by Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967. It will include the participation of Pablo Bustinduy Amador, Spain’s Minister of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030; Husni Abdel Wahed, the Ambassador of Palestine in Spain; Sankie Mthembi-Mahanyele, the Ambassador of South Africa in Spain, and Raquel Martí, the Executive Director of UNRWA Spain. The General Director of Casa Árabe, Irene Lozano, will give a welcoming speech on behalf of Casa Árabe.
It will be structured around two questions:
• How should we articulate the defense, protection and assurance of human rights as a sine qua non condition for achieving the the Sustainable Development Goals?
• What role should governments and the international community play in the coordinated and global response to situations involving human rights violations, such as those taking place in Palestine?
