To mark this anniversary, which is remembered every year on March 30, we will be taking a look back at the event “Palestine: Art and resistance in Nayi al-Ali,” dedicated to the figure of the Palestinian cartoonist and universal artist who created one of the Palestinian resistance’s most recognizable icons.

Organized by Casa Árabe and Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo, the event was a presentation of the book “Palestine: Art and resistance in Nayi al-Ali,” a work which sought to remind us about the figure of this Palestinian cartoonist and universal artist, increasing awareness among the Spanish-speaking public about the importance of his work and the impact made by his thinking. In addition to the introductory texts by Teresa Aranguren and Antonio Altarriba, the volume offers us a tour through the life of Nayi al-Ali (1936-1987), as well as a very broad selection of his comics and cartoons.

A creator of one of the most recognizable icons of the Palestinian resistance, the child Handala, al-Ali used his artistic talent to send out a message: he denounced the injustice against Palestine, with the refugee population at its very core. Al-Ali was brutally murdered in London just four months before the outbreak of the First Intifada. Though it has been over thirty years since his death, and Scotland Yard reopened the investigation, the crime’s perpetrator has never been discovered.

In order to discuss his work and legacy, Casa Árabe will be speaking with journalist Teresa Aranguren and comic artist and critic Antonio Altarriba, as well as the author’s son, Khalid al-Ali. You can watch a video of the event here:
