Casa Árabe is organizing the presentation of this new publication by the
Catarata publishing firm, containing an overview of the Arab Springs
and a new increase in uprisings against authoritarian regimes, slowed
only by COVID-19. It will be held on September 22 at our headquarters in
Madrid.
The Arab Springs that took place in the Middle East and Maghreb region from 2011 on should be seen as the starting point of a far-reaching protest process. Although many interpreted the “Arab Spring” as having paved the way to an “Islamist autumn,” the truth is that this process of social mobilization is far from having ended, as seen through the upsurge in demonstrations over the last five years.
The unexpected outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic on the scene in 2020 succeeded in momentarily weakening this second wave of social mobilizations. However, the worsening economic crisis, the exponential increase in poverty, the restriction of freedoms and harsher authoritarianism could create a perfect storm which might reignite protests against authoritarian regimes. The purpose of the book is to focus on this second wave of popular uprisings in the Middle East and the Maghreb over the last five years by analyzing the status of nine countries of the region: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran.
Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio, Isaías Barreñada Bajo and Laura Mijares, the book’s editors, will be participating in the presentation.
