Presentation of "Cinema and Diplomacy"

From May 28, 2013 until June 04, 2013

On Tuesday, June 4, Amador Martínez Morcillo is presenting his book "Cinema and Diplomacy" in Madrid, with a prologue by Eduardo Torres-Dulce. The presentation, which will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Casa Árabe Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62), will include the attendance of Eduardo López Busquets, Casa Árabe’s General Director, and Amador Martínez Morcillo, the work’s author.

In the twentieth century, cinema has become a form of expression which brings together and shows off what people share, think, believe and long for. From this perspective, how has cinema come closer to diplomats? The author takes a look at this topic by analyzing a well-stock list of films. They range from classics such as Der Kongress Tanzt and The Fallen Idol, to the latest premieres to come out recently, as well as Missing, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (El discreto encanto de la burguesía), Cantinflas himself, the masterful Hitchcock, the unavoidable James Bond and even the so often quoted Emmanuelle, and many more.

He also stops to take a look at how cinema has dealt with Spanish diplomats. The answer, in either case, is not exactly positive. The author attempts to look for the causes behind this treatment and believes he has found them in History and Society.

The other side of the coin leads to the question: “How have diplomats come closer to cinema?” The answer can be found in many places. However, the author, in order to respond, has preferred to recover, for both cinema and diplomacy, an unfairly forgotten personage, Edgar Neville. In addition to other things, the author joins him to take a journey to Morocco, on an impossible mission to search for lost Spaniards.

Amador Martínez Morcillo

Born at the beach of Malvarrosa in Valencia, he is an Ambassador of Spain. He began his professional life in teaching, holding responsibility for the “Diplomatic and Consular Law” chair at the Universidad Complutense, and courses in that same subject matter at the Diplomacy and International Civil Servants Schools in Madrid. An Associate Professor of International Law at the Centro de Estudios Universitarios (CEU) in Madrid, he also ran his own Academy to help candidates preparing to take their exams to enter the Diplomatic Corps.

In 1965, he entered Spain’s Foreign Service, which took him to New York, Brasilia, Edinburgh and Madrid, as the Chief International Legal Advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he undertook very intensive activity as a treaty negotiator. As a Mission Chief, he has been an official representative of Spain in Mexico, as well as Ambassador to China, Ethiopia, the Seychelles, Djibouti and the Geneva Disarmament Conference.

A conference speaker and author of monographic works, he has also written several books on international legal topics. Added to this are his articles for the world of journalism, with commentary on current events in politics, published under the pseudonym “Enrique de Paz,” in the Mexican press, in the newspapers “Excelsior” and “Novedades,” as well as the magazine “Siempre.”

Through this book, he is now examining cinema with the same accuracy and depth as in all his prior works, to which he has added a more carefree, amenable style, which the book’s subject matter requires.
