On the occasion of World Refugee Day, taking place on June 20, we will
be holding a dialogue with Lebanese graphic novelist Zeina Abirached and
French writer Mathias Énard. You can watch the interview on our social
media channels.
As she already did in Le Piano oriental, Zeina Abirached is back again to take a closer look at the cultures of East and West, with the cooperation of Mathias Énard, winner of the Goncourt Award in 2015. The Lebanese graphic novelist and French writer will be talking with Casa Árabe’s Karim Hauser about their “four-handed” creation of two unusual love stories, one set in Afghanistan in 1939 and the other in Berlin in 2016. The latter, between a young German man and a Syrian refugee, will include performances through the voices of Samy Khalil and Aya el Dika, to breathe life into several excerpts from the book, all as part of World Refugee Day, taking place on June 20. The presentation is being held with the cooperation of the Salamandra Graphic publishing firm.
Zeina Abirached was born in Beirut in 1981. She graduated from Lebanon’s School of Fine Arts with a major in graphic arts, and in 2004 she moved to Paris, where she studied animation at the National School of Decorative Arts. Her most important works include Je me souviens (published in Spanish as “Me acuerdo Beirut, ”Mourir, partir, revenir - Le Jeu des hirondelles (translated into English as “A Game for Swallows: To Die, To Leave, To Return” and "Le Piano oriental" (published in Spanish by Salamandra, 2016), a work for which she was awarded the Phénix Prize of 2016. She combines her work as a writer and comic artist with that of an illustrator, which has led her to collaborate on creating various festival signs and book covers for different publishing firms.
Mathias Énard was born in France in 1972. He studied Arabic and Farsi at the INALCO (Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales). His most recent novel to be published, "Boussole (Compass)", won the Goncourt Award in France in 2015 and the Leipzig Book Fair Award in Germany, and was shortlisted for the International Man Booker Prize in 2017. Before that, he had had other novels published, including "La perfection du tir" (2003), "Remonter l’Orénoque" (2005) and "Zone" (2008). In 2016, he was bestowed membership in the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Ministry of Culture based on his literary creations, with the rank of Officier des Arts et des Lettres. In the year 2000, after spending several years in the Middle East, he changed his place of residence to Barcelona.
