Presentation of issue nº 11 of “Awraq” en Valencia

The University of Valencia is hosting the presentation of this issue,
dedicated to Al-Andalus and Mudéjar art and how it is projected
internationally.
On the occasion of the publication of issue number 11 of the journal “Awraq,” the School of Geography and History at the University of Valencia is holding a round table discussion to present its content. With the title “Al-Andalus and Mudéjar Art and Its International Projection: Legacy and modernity,” this journal published by Casa Árabe reviews some examples of the ways in which the art from these periods has been represented in Latin America, with such significant architectural works as the Alhambra providing inspiration. It makes clear the important role historically played by culture and art in Spain as mediators which connect the Arab world with Latin America.
Taking part in the round-table discussion are Ester Alba, Dean of the School of Geography and History at the University of Valencia; Eduardo López Busquets, the General Director of Casa Árabe and director of the journal “Awraq”; and Lola Bañón, a journalist who specializes in the Arab world and a professor at the School of Philology and Communication at the University of Valencia.
The publication is structured on the basis of a discourse amongst ten specialists, from a notably historical focus, including the dual dimension of past and present. Among other topics, the authors analyze the importance of the international scope of Al-Andalus’ artistic legacy and that of the Mudéjar period, throughout the nineteenth century, as well as their representation at the various universal expositions. They also highlight the importance of Spanish designer Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (1871-1949) as a figure who spread our heritage internationally through his collection of textiles and other pieces from Al-Andalus, inherited from his father, Orientalist painter Mariano Fortuny y Marsal. Similarly, the part dedicated to the European internationalization of this art is exemplified by such representations as the project for construction of the Paris Mosque, which began in 1921. Last of all, the reflection of the architectural configuration of the Alhambra and Generalife round off the topics which are discussed by the journal.
