Casa Árabe is hosting the presentation of the book Siria. Revolución, sectarismo y yihad (Syria: Revolution, sectarianism and Jihad) by Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio. The event will be introduced by Aristóteles Moreno Villafaina.

What began as a people’s revolution against Bashar al-Assad soon transformed into a civil confrontation between an authoritarian regime and various rebel groups. The West’s indifference to Syria opened up the path for regional powers that armed the different sides in the conflict. It was at that stage that the Jihadist caliphate proclaimed by ISIS came about. In order to attempt to understand the Syrian conflict, it is not enough to just examine the internal situation there. One must also take a close look at regional and international factors in order to determine to what extent involvement by Russia, Iran, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar have made the war even worse.

The book’s presentation will be given by the author, Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio and will include the intervention of Aristóteles Moreno Villafaina. The event will be presented by Javier Rosón.

Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio is a tenured professor of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Alicante and the Middle East and North Africa coordinator at the Foreign Policy Observatory of Fundación Alternativas. He is also a researcher at the Inter-University Institute of Social Development and Peace (IUDESP) and a member of the Executive Board on the Spanish Committee of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). He has published or edited over a dozen books on the Middle East, including Siria contemporánea (Contemporary Syria, 2009), and he is a regular contributor to several media, such as El País, El Correo and TVE.
