Presentation of the Book "The Sultanas of the Alhambra"

From September 04, 2013 until September 26, 2013

With the cooperation of the Board of Trustees of the Alhambra and Generalife and the Editorial Comares publishing firm, we will be presenting the book "The Sultanas of the Alhambra: The Great Unknowns of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada (13th-15th centuries)" by Bárbara Boloix Gallardo, on the upcoming date of Thursday, September 26.

This is the first study dedicated solely and exclusively to the women of the Nasrid dynasty, a group which has remained relegated to silence and oblivion. Based on an analysis of medieval Arab and Christian sources, it constitutes and attempt to reveal information to readers which few people were aware of up to now, including the names and personalities of these princesses, how they lived their lives, the influence which some of them came to hold in Granada’s politics and the intrigue which took place to ensure the rise to power by their sons. The scope of their social status and their legal abilities, and the official treatments which they received are other topics covered by this study, which ends by describing the spaces they inhabited and their last dwellings. It is an overview of Nasrid history through the eyes of its women. Participating in the event will be Eduardo López Busquets, General Director of Casa Árabe, Bárbara Boloix, the book’s author, and Maria del Mar Villafranca, the Director of the Board of Trustees of the Alhambra and Generalife. The presentation will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Casa Árabe Auditorium in Madrid (at Calle Alcalá, 62). Free entrance until the room’s capacity is reached.
