An Artistic and Literary Appeal for the Recovery of the Gran Teatro Cervantes in Tangier.March 10, 2014 - MADRID
The centennial anniversary of the opening of the Gran Teatro Cervantes of Tangier, a work by architect and local Tangier resident Diego Giménez, commissioned by the Peña Orellana family, took place on December 12, 2013. The theater was acquired by the Spanish government in 1928, and numerous artists from Spain and the various communities within the city performed there. It was an emblematic monument to the people of Tangier, with a history not free of difficulties until it ceased to host events two decades ago. The publishing of the book Un escenario en ruinas (A Stage in Ruins) has occurred in response to a shared feeling about the theater among many of the people who have been linked to the city of Tangier and is led by Consuelo Hernández, Mezouar El Idrissi, Santiago Martín Guerrero and Jesús Carazo.Participating in the event are Consuelo Hernández, a painter and one of this book’s authors; Mezouar El Idrissi, a poet, translator, literary critic and one of this book’s authors, and Domingo del Pino Gutiérrez, a journalist. Presenting the discussion is Nuria Medina, coordinator of Casa Árabe’s area of Culture and New Media.
This event is taking place on March 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the Casa Árabe auditorium in Madrid (at Calle Alcalá, 62). Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.
About the Speakers
Consuelo Hernández
A painter and tenured professor of Spanish Language and Literature, Ms. Hernandez’s dedication to teaching and painting were a constant in her life until the year of 2008, when she became exclusively dedicated to art. Her extensive career in the art world has taken form in a large number of exhibitions at Spanish galleries and institutions, as well as taking part in international art fairs, including those of Hong Kong, Chicago, Singapore, Paris and The Hague. Her works have been exhibited at the Cervantes Institutes in Morocco. Several art collections include her works, including the Art Museum of Salamanca.
Mezouar El Idrissi
A Moroccan poet who writes in the Arabic language, Mr. El Idrissi is a doctor of Arabic Literature; a founding member of the literary association “Friends of Federico García Lorca” in his native city, Tetouan; a member of the Writers’ Union of Morocco and a professor at the King Fahd Advanced School of Translation (Abdelmalek Essaadi University of Tetouan-Tangier). He had his first book of poems published in a bilingual Spanish-Arabic edition, Elegía para la espalda mojada (Elegy for the Wetback), in the year 2006. A second book of poems was published shortly after with the title of Entre dos aguas (Between Two Waters). In addition to being a poet, he is a literary critic and translator. As a translator, he has published Arabic-language anthologies of Joaquín Benito de Lucas, Andrés Sánchez Robayna, Luis García Montero and Vicente Aleixandre. He is a regular collaborator of both Spanish and Arabic literary journals.
Domingo del Pino Gutiérrez
A notable journalist in the international arena, he is an expert on the Arab and Islamic world. He was a correspondent for the Prela Agency in Havana, Paris, Algiers and Beirut from 1968 to 1976; second-in-command of the International section of El País from 1976-1977 and a special envoy and correspondent for this newspaper in several Southern African countries (1977), Morocco (1979) and North Africa (1982). He was also the head of the International section of Diario 16 in 1978, and the editor-in-chief of the International section of the weekly edition of Cambio 16 in 1986.
