Organized by Fundación Culturas del Mediterráneo, the presentation will include speeches by Miguel Moro Aguilar, the General Director of Casa Árabe; Ahmed Kaddour, director of the journal Hesperia; Juan Martos Quesada, a member of the Editorial Board of Hesperia; Patricia Martín Fernández, a professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid; María Victoria Caro Bernal, from the Ateneo of Madrid; and Abdou Tounsi, president of the Circulo Intercultural Hispano-Árabe.
The purpose of the journal is to promote cultural integration between both shores of the Mediterranean by increasing awareness about their cultural heritage, economic cohesion, human capital and values.
Issue number 29 of the journal Hesperia. Culturas del Mediterráneo, titled “Spain and the Mediterranean I,” explores Spain’s historical, cultural and geopolitical role as a bridge between Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Through academic articles and informational essays, this issue reflects upon the ties that have united Mediterranean societies across the centuries, paying special attention to intercultural dialogue, Al-Andalus heritage and contemporary challenges to cooperation in the region. The journal thus continues to pursue its goal of promoting mutual understanding amongst the different cultures throughout the Mediterranean from a humanistic, multidisciplinary perspective.
The monograph addresses topics such as Phoenician-Punic toponymy in pre-Roman Hispania, the figure of Melqart and his identification with Heracles in Gadir, new interpretations of the conquest in the year 711 and the diaspora of Al-Andalus communities, as well as studies on intercultural education, comparative linguistics between Spanish and Arabic, sustainable development in the Arab region, and the contemporary political challenges faced by Iran. The issue is rounded off with an interview of Miguel Moro Aguilar, Casa Árabe’s General Director, with reflections on the Islamization of Al-Andalus, relations between the Andalusis and Christians, works on Iraqi poetry and literature from The Thousand and One Nights, as well as various book reviews, offering a diverse overview of the history, culture, language and sociopolitical reality of the Mediterranean.
